Conquer Yourself (Productivity, Self-Discipline, etc.)

Peace,

The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself; to be
conquered by self is of all things the most shameful and vile

First, a short video-introduction

(Check out the full book reading here.)

Second, a brief audio-description:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Note: The “Conquer Yourself” series is currently down for reconstruction…with the exception of sessions 2, 5, 9, 11 and the conclusion.

Besides these, you can also see a complete archive of ALL posts having to do with productivity, self-discipline, and the cultivation of inner-strength here

SESSION 2: UNDERSTANDING & OVERCOMING PROCRASTINATION:
Underlying our physical procrastination is a mistaken, mental connotation between what we do and our sense of value as a human being…

We often turn simple tasks into measurements of who we are: evidence of whether or not we’re acceptable and forecasts of our future… whether we’ll be successful and happy or a miserable failure.”

There’s a dope exercise in here, and I also introduce the book, “The Now Habit,” by Neil Fiore, PhD. Check it out.

>> BGM: “Aqueous Transmissions” by Incubus

SESSION 5: NATIVE AMERICAN WISDOM VS. OUR TECHNOLOGICAL WORLD:
“A Cherokee elder once told the children of his tribe, ‘A battle is happening within me – a terrible battle between two wolves. One wolf is of fear, anger, guilt, greed and senselessness; the other of faith, peace, truth, love and reason…This same battle is happening inside of each of you, and inside every other person as well.’

After the children thought for a moment, one asked, ‘Which wolf will win?’ to which the old Cherokee replied, ‘The one you choose to feed.’”

What I’m saying here is that the society we live in conditions us for internal confusion and disharmony with others, because people who conquer themselves DO NOT make good consumers, pawns or mental slaves of any sort. In fact, they tend to work AGAINST that social dynamic by creating harmony and progress wherever they are.

One way we can avoid that condition and transform ourselves for the better is by looking towards the Native American mind-state and other indigenous traditions for guidance.

>> BGM: “Know Your Enemy” by Yoko Kanno…this one is vicious: if nothing else, you should go there to listen to this song. My homegirl and I call it “a musical oasis from the stresses of the world.”

SESSION 9: ON SO-CALLED “TIME-MANAGEMENT”
“We’re becoming what I call the ‘obsessive snacking culture’….(and if you follow this trend of) obsessively snacking on things – whether they be food, relationships with other people or learning like we’re doing here – you’re going to be missing at least 80 or 90% of the value…”

This one has two great audio clips: one from business consultant Eben Pagan and another from yours truly (a clip from an old presentation I gave with my college activist peoples back in the day). Both will help you rethink the way you approach productivity and time-management on a fundamental level.

Each audio has BGM of its own, the first is “Dew” by Illaria Graziano, and the second is a joint off of the soundtrack for Samurai Champloo.

SESSION 11: ATTAIN PEAK PERFORMANCE THROUGH AN ATHLETE’S APPROACH

“‘When a player comes to recognize that learning to focus may be more valuable to him than his backhand, he shifts from being primarily a player of the outer game to being a player of the Inner Game. Then, instead of learning to focus to improve his tennis, he practices tennis to improve his focus…
~ W. Timothy Gallwey

In Gallwey’s classic, The Inner Game of Tennis, his main point was that the inner critic is the number one obstacle of focused play. In sports psychology, this principle extends to all types of athletic performance, and for our purposes here, this principle extends to all fields of life.”

Here I go more in-depth about the subject of athleticism and the state of mind top-level athletes seek to attain at all times. There’s also another great segment from my upcoming book available for free download too. Check it out…

>>BGM: “Splendor” once more…
