HOW TO GAIN WILLPOWER, Shakespeare Style…
“Sometimes we’re devils to ourselves, when we tempt the
frailty of our powers by presuming on their changeful potency…”
~ Shakespeare in “Troilus & Cressida” (Act 4, Scene 5, 94-95)
What did Shakespeare have to say about cultivating willpower? How can insight from the world’s greatest literary genius help us to stay focused, ambitious, energized and “on point” in the twenty-first century???
Here I use a classic, yet obscure line from Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Troilus & Cressida’ – connecting it with some leading, scientific research – to discuss how we can gain and incorporate an enhanced sense of willpower, mental strength, self-control and decision-making ability into our everyday lives, short-term goals (artistic pursuits, weight loss, dieting and financial goals, etc.), personal relationships and long-term career ambitions.
