WHY INTEGRITY IS A FORM OF NUTRITION (The Forgotten Aspect of Holistic Health)

2 August 2010 No Comment

This upcoming Sunday, I’ll be on Patrice Solomon’s Blog Talk Radio Program “Inner-Light Radio,” to talk about several powerful subjects…check out the questions he’s sent me so far:

bald black man thinking“I’d like to cover the following grounds:

1. Your line of work with the brain, psychology, neuro-science etc.
2. Depression in our current society
3. Food and nutrition, being of your word, and
4. ADDICTION: a big topic, as I believe that addiction isn’t just the substance, but the chemicals induced by the brain, whether positive or negative…”

So here’s a rough-draft response to number three…

It’s interesting you put these concepts together, because when we think about holistic health, the tendency is to focus on mental, physical and spiritual health only – that’s usually the three-point framework we come from.

I’m not here to talk to you about morals per se, but I do believe that INTEGRITY is a form of nutrition, and when I say integrity, I simply mean “having values and living up to those values in the real world, consistently…”

I put up a facebook status recently that said:

susan scott fierce conversationsThese are both from the audio book, “Fierce Conversations: Achieving Success at Work & in Life One Conversation at a Time” where Susan outlines how authentic, direct and blunt communication is key to a progressive and fulfilling life.

She talks about how we can transform our existence “one conversation at a time”: how honest and transparent dialogs with the people that matter (friends, family, colleagues, etc.) create breakthroughs in our relationships and in our careers…she also takes your hand and guides you through the entire process.

With me for instance, one of my values is “radical honesty” – I believe in tackling issues head-on and having conversations that interrogate real problems, regardless of whether or not this’ll create tension or conflict with other people.

I’ve noticed that to the extent that I don’t follow this, I feel a little less of a human being… like I’ve lost energy and fell down to a lower plane, or like I shut myself off from my own power.

Like I said earlier, this website is called “DO the knowledge,” and part of that knowledge goes beyond the simple information you have and into the realm of your sense of purpose and personal values

Values (i.e. morals) are what give you definition, and definition is what gives you purpose, direction and power…to the extent that you deny yourself of these nutrients, you set yourself up for sickness, disease and deterioration of another form…
